This session aims to give a clear understanding of the technical elements which are required from accessing the internet/broadband all the way to the end user (data rooms/ dish - backbone - mesh - end user). This includes installation, maintenance and operation (hardware, software, network services, activities). Network and power infrastructure. Scalability.

This session should offer a) a view into the technology possibility of CNs b) as well as a chance for CNs to analyse their own technical set up or possibilities in a practical way.

Sustainability & Governance Training

Community network operators only

This session is aims to give a clear idea of the various elements that play into the sustainability of CNs; business (governance, finance), legal, social. Understanding planning aspects, opportunities, start up and business operation and business purpose, documentation (lessons learned and evidence building), reporting, unique value proposition and constraints.

The session should offer practical tools and examples towards understanding the phases of planning, start up, operation and growth, perhaps building a business canvas/ plan.

Connecting the unconnected in Africa

The session sets the scene on the importance of connecting the unconnected with special focus on Africa. It will touch on what affordable access is, how CNs are the uniquely positioned in closing this gap and the CN campaign in Africa.

The session will end with Zenzeleni presenting on how the network started and role of the community in CN, sharing local and global perspectives

The session looks at the current CNs financial and business models. It will highlight how CNs are funded initially and how they are sustained. It will also address opportunities for funding e.g. from governments and development agencies, and how they can remain sustainable post grant funding.

Beyond Access - Developing Local Solutions

The goal of this session is to discuss the role of community networks play in offering local solutions. The panelists will share local solutions being offered to the community and impact.

Each of the panelists will share strategies to they use support local access to education, health services, production and distribution of information and preservation of indigenous cultures. They will also discuss the barriers and potential solutions to promote creation of locally relevant digital content.
